Who Is Herman Miller?
Herman Miller was the businessman father-in-law of D.J. De Pree, a young man who had been hired as a clerk by the Michigan Star Furniture Company in Zeeland, Michigan, in 1909. The company manufactured high-quality home furniture. In 1923, De Pree convinced his father-in-law to help him buy the furniture company and then named the company after him.
Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the Herman Miller Furniture Company gained recognition for its modern furniture designs. Two of the most notable were the Eames Molded Plywood Chair, introduced in 1946, which was named the “Best Design of the 20th Century” by Time magazine in 2000, and the Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, constructed of molded plywood and leather, which was introduced in 1956 and has become one of the most recognized furniture designs of the 20th century.
